News from the Giro d'Italia 2023

A few days ago the Giro d'Italia 2023 was presented. Of course there isn't the fuss like the Tour de France. In Italy it is. But maybe not so much in the rest of the world.

It's fair to say that in their better days the Italians were in charge in many parts of the world. Don't know if those were good times for everyone. A former cycling star had even appeared in the jersey of a Roman emperor in his good times. Now Mario Cipollini will have to change the outfit with the striped one of the prisons. The judges sentenced him to three years in prison for assaulting his former wife.

Let's talk about the Giro 2023. It runs under the motto all roads lead to Rome. And after circling around Rome quite boldly at the beginning, cyclists then come by plane on the last day. Incidentally, an intermediate station before that is Campo Imperatore, located on the Gran Sasso. The Mussolini story is well known. In addition, the site was part of Italian history earlier.

But with the Giro we are strating somewhere completely different. On the coast of the Adriatic. There the race will be opened with a time trial. It is 16.4 km from Fossacesia Marina to  Ortona. It's flat. Only the last kilometer has 51 meters in altitude. Incidentally, there are 2 more time trials at the Giro. It is 70 kilometers in total. The Belgians are already cheering and see Remco Evenepoel as the sure winner of the 2023 Giro.

From the start you make a journey to the south. Two little Italians dreaming of Napoli. And that's where the journey goes, of course. One stage will be held at the foot of Vesuvius. I'm already looking forward to the chaotic traffic conditions around Naples. After this 6th stage, the route quickly heads north again. The Appenin is crossed again. Because you want to do a time trial in Cesena. In whose honor do you think?

Then comes the Nordschleife, which is usual in the Giro. This time clockwise. After Liguria we go to the Alps. And this is where the Giro should be decided. Unless Remco Evenepoel takes the overall victory on the penultimate day in the mountain time trial from Tarvisio   to Monte Lussari. It is 18.6 km long. But at the end there is another hump with 800 meters of altitude difference. Over a distance of 7 kilometers. I'm really excited to see if this mountain will be the decider of the tour. For most guys, though, it's just a ticket to Rome. Because that's what everyone who wants to get on the plane and make a bella figura on the Via Roma has to do.
