The Woerden Cyclo Cross.

Woerden has nothing to do with the Woerdense Verlaat. In this place we had to stay overnight with our boat. Due to low water, locks could only be locked once a day. Few people know that in Holland there is often a bad water shortage in summer. The Rhine, which is so mighty in our country, is just a trickle here. Rather smaller than the Sieg. At least that is what is called the Rhine here.

But Worden has nothing to do with it. Especially not the Cyclo Cross. The Dutch Eleite drivers like to use it. It also takes place in the evening. With flooding streets, lanterns. Kind of like the Schmitter Nacht near Cologne, just more off-road. You also drive through a building. The large barn is a popular meeting place for those who want to take photos. And so the boys are already used to the lightning storm.

Belgian toppers are rarely seen in Woerden. They prefer to stay at home. Because there is more coal. Not just for profit. The entry fees are also a bit more lavish than in Holland. But it must also be taken into account that the three top riders, I'm talking about Van der Poel, Van Aert and Tom Pidcock, will probably only show their legs to the public in December.

Then checkout is done quickly. I was told that a small cyclo cross competition in Brittany once rewarded Mr. Van Aert with 30,000 euros just for the start. The sponsor pays for that, of course. He then hopes for a nice hour of advertising on television. Do you know what a minute of advertising before the sports show does? I can tell you it's a bargain compared to that.

Of course, Woerden is a must for the Dutch Toppers. Unless the big Belgians are involved, victory is all but certain. Lars Van der Haarmun is no small man. At the last World Cup in Tabor he finished second behind Iserbyt. In front of the rest of the Belgian elite. But being at the top of the podium is even better. That also happened in Worden. With a good half-minute lead over Belgian Quinten Hermans.

A German athlete was also there in Holland. I'm talking about Felix Paul. The young man didn't have much luck. Because he was the last driver to see the finish line, more than 7 minutes behind. But maybe one can speak of luck after all. Because he just wasn't lapped and was allowed to stay in the race. You can also count it as a success.
