Robinson Chalapud wins the Vuelta al Ecuador
As you can imagine, the Vuelta al Ecuador is an altitude race. You rarely get below the 2000 meter isohypse. Natural bushes adapted to the height are already in demand. In German skiing, oxygen masks would certainly be recommended here and there. Not because you want to gain a tremendous advantage. Just because it looks nicer.
But German drivers, especially those who have done skiing before, are here at the start. Only the real tough guys hang around here, who sometimes do competitive sports without oxygen. However, I do not want to attach any importance to the hematocrit values here.
The only thing that is clear is that the locals have a certain advantage. this is also reflected in the winner list of the day and the tour. It lasts at least 8 days. However, the stages are not quite as long as Europe. you have to be able to breathe again. The great master of breath-hold ended up being Colombian rider Robinson Chalapud of Team Banco Guayaquil Ecuador. In the top ten you only find Ecuadorians or Colombians. Guys who are probably a little more used to the altitude than other riders.
The best foreign driver, so to speak, was the US American Ian Lopez in 14th place. As for the Mexicans, I assume they also have altitude in their blood, but they are even further behind.
